ABSTRACT

Aim: To study the adsorption of Rose Bengal dye used in textile industries by Canna indica-chitin-alginate beads. Methodology: C. indica-chitin-alginate composite beads were prepared using root tubers of Canna indica, chitin from shrimp shells and sodium alginate. Batch adsorption of Rose Bengal dye was carried out with optimized parameters like pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage and dye concentrations. Characterization studies like SEM, FTIR and TGA and reusability of composite beads were also studied. Results: The maximum adsorption of 97.9% was obtained at pH 6, 80 min contact time with the optimized ratio of 1:1:0.05 C. indica-chitin-alginate towards 100 mg l-1 dye concentration. The SEM analysis showed a porous surface morphology whereas FTIR results exhibited the functional groups of Rose Bengal dye and composite beads, proving successful adsorption. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the composite beads could withstand a maximum temperature of 300oC. Interpretation: It is inferred from the study that a biosorbent prepared from a commonly available plant and shells of shrimp, which is considered as a waste, can be effectively used in the adsorption of harmful textile dyes from the effluent in an eco-friendly and cost-effective way.

ABSTRACT

Background: The obstetric patient for Caesarean section usually presents more challenges to the anaesthesiologist than other patients. Spinal anaesthesia is perhaps the most accepted approach to these challenges. It offers a fast, profound, definite and higher quality of sensory and motor blockade for Caesarean delivery. Spinal anaesthesia is associated with some complications, the commonest of these being hypotension of a reported incidence of greater than 80% despite fluid preload and lateral uterine displacement. To study the anesthetic profile of women undergoing the cesarean section delivery. Methods: The present randomized controlled study was conducted among 100 subjects. Results: The age, weight, height and parity are comparable in both the groups. The mean values of maternal baseline heart rate in Group P and E are 89.52 ± 11.89 and 92.20 ± 11.56 respectively. The mean SBP values obtained in Group P and Group E are 123.52 ± 7.84 and 123.14 ± 8.98 respectively. Similarly, diastolic blood pressure values in Group P and Group E are 80.94±8.10 and 81.18±9.12. Baseline mean arterial pressure in the Group P and Group E are 95.00 ± 7.20 and 95.00 ± 8.26 mm of Hg. Conclusion: Apgar score at 1 and 5 minutes is comparable in both Group P and Group E.

ABSTRACT

Wireless capsule endoscopy is a relatively new diagnostic technique for the detection of small bowel disease. Currently represents an increasingly used method for diagnostic evaluation of the small intestine. It is important for surgeons to be familiar with its uses and complication that may arise. We report an interesting case of spontaneous video capsule entrapment in small bowel Crohn’s disease in which diagnosis was made radiologically.

ABSTRACT

Pyoderma gangrenosum is an inflammatory condition of the skin commonly associated with inflammatory bowel disease and rheumatoid arthritis, but also associated with various hematological malignancies. We describe its association with pure red cell aplasia in a four year old boy who presented with progressive skin lesions, fever and pallor, and improved with corticosteroid therapy.

ABSTRACT

Mean kidney length in 230 Indian children without apparent renal disease were examined sonographically and correlated with, age, body weight, length / height, upper thigh (femur) length, head circumference and chest circumference. Mean kidney is length best correlated with height, followed by upper thigh (femur) length and chest circumference.

ABSTRACT

Hepatic adenomatosis (HA) is a rare disorder that is susceptible to hemorrhagic complications and, rarely, to malignant transformation. We report a 24-year-old woman who was found to have HA with > 10 tumors; she presented with simultaneous rupture of two of the adenomas, along with malignant change in one. Hematoma evacuation and caudate lobe resection were done and she has been doing well 6 months later.

ABSTRACT

The proton pump inhibitors have consistently been shown to be far more effective than the others are in gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) block the final and rate-limiting step of parietal acid production. The primary objective of the study was to assess the efficacy and tolerability of esomeprazole 40 mg given once a day for 4 weeks in patients with reflux oesophagitis. An open, non-comparative study was done with 103 patients in 4 centres with endoscopic erosive oesophagitis. Symptoms of reflux oesophagitis such as heartburn/retrosternal pain and regurgitation recorded on a 4-point scale, dysphagia being marked as present or absent. Oesophagitis was graded as 5-point scale. There was a significant decrease in mean score of heartburn (60.8% and 86%), retrosternal pain (60.84% and 86.75%), mean score of regurgitation (65% and 90%) at second and fourth week respectively. Global assessment of overall symptoms by patients showed complete resolution of symptoms in 86.4% patients at week 4. At the end of treatment 93 out of 103 patients showed complete healing, 13.6% of total cases had side effects. Esomeprazole was found effective and safe in the treatment of GERD.
